\"\"I\u2019m very happy with my Dell Precision M4500<\/a> equipped with Intel Core i7-740QM<\/a>, 8GB RAM, nVidia Quadro FX 1800M<\/a> and Seagate 500GB FIPS self-encrypting disk<\/a>. <\/p>\n

But there\u2019s one major<\/strong> setback; it overheats<\/strong> extremely quickly (as mentioned by TechRadar<\/a>). This is especially true after a certain period of using the system. The fans suck in fresh air  and (after cooling the processor, gpu and chipset) blows it again. In the meantime it collects dust<\/strong> on the fan and the vent.<\/p>\n

After removing the dust my CPU temperature decreased from 83C\/181F<\/strong> to 51C\/124F<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

High CPU temperature<\/h4>\n

I\u2019ve been using the laptop since February 2011<\/strong> and I noticed the CPU<\/strong> temperature<\/strong> was getting pretty high<\/strong> (and the system was slowing down<\/strong>). Yesterday I worked the whole day with the Remote Desktop Client (a low impact process) and recorded a peak<\/strong> temperature of 83C\/181F<\/strong>. My collegaue Remko Weijnen even measured a whoppin\u2019 96C\/205F!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The dust collector<\/h4>\n

Because dust<\/strong> is collected in the fan<\/strong> and the vent<\/strong>, the cooling<\/strong> capabilities decreases<\/strong> resulting in a higher temperature. So the most logical<\/strong> thing to do is to clean<\/strong> the dust. I\u2019ve opened the laptop, removed the fan and blew the dust<\/strong> out<\/strong>. Today I\u2019ve worked with the Remote Desktop Client again and recorded a more acceptable<\/strong> peak temperature of  58C\/136F<\/strong> and a nominal temperature of 51C\/124F.<\/p>\n

Cleaning the dust<\/h4>\n

Step 1 <\/strong>: Remove the central screw (1), screws that hold the HDD (4) and slide the back to the front.<\/p>\n

Step 2: <\/strong>Remove the screws (7) that holds the fan and thermal block in place (the screws are marked with a number, remove them in the provided order) and slide the whole unit to the right and up.<\/p>\n

Step 3: <\/strong>Remove the fan from the fan-holder by removing the screws (3)<\/p>\n

Step 4: <\/strong>Remove the dust from the fan, vent and back using a air-duster, compressor or vacuum cleaner.<\/p>\n
