The introduction of Citrix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citrix.com\/news\/announcements\/may-2013\/citrix-extends-enterprise-mobility-strategy-with-xendesktop-7.html\">XenDesktop 7<\/a> showed us that delivery of&#160; applications and desktops from shared <strong>and<\/strong> private computers are now integrated in one product. This requires us to explain the difference between <strong>shared <\/strong>versus <strong>private <\/strong>instead of <strong>XenApp<\/strong> versus <strong>XenDesktop, <\/strong>so now <em>really<\/em> is the time to start using new (and proper) terminology.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/virtual-desktop-word-bingo-stop-using-vdi\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=virtual-desktop-word-bingo-stop-using-vdi\">previous virtual desktop word bingo article<\/a> I\u2019ve asked you if <strong>you <\/strong>think we should abandon the term VDI, <strong>61%<\/strong> agreed while <strong>26%<\/strong> disagreed. The response showed that a lot of readers agree the term VDI is \u201c<em>incorrect<\/em>\u201d but replacing the term will be <strong>tough<\/strong>. Nonetheless I strongly believe we, as the community \/ experts, should strive to replace \u201cVDI\u201d with more future ready terminology.&#160; <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<h1><font style=\"font-weight: bold\">XenDesktop 7<\/font><\/h1>\n<p>  <\/p>\n<p>Although you might expect <strong>Citrix<\/strong> would come up with proper naming (as they tend to rename products \/ features quite frequently) the feature matrix (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citrix.com\/go\/products\/xendesktop\/feature-matrix\">link<\/a>) shows a mix of vague terminology. I admit the abbreviations HSCI and HPCI aren&#8217;t as sexy as VDI, a three letter abbreviation might be simpler.<\/p>\n<p>Gunnar Berger (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gunnarwb\">@gunnarwb<\/a>) informed me that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/technology\/home.jsp\">Gartner<\/a> <em>still<\/em> uses the SBC term where I suggested HSCI and Server Hosted Virtual Desktops (SHVD) where I suggest Hosted Private Computer Infrastructure (HPCI)&#160; to replace VDI.&#160; <br clear=\"all\" \/><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-lightbulb\" style=\"border-top-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none\" alt=\"Gloeilampje\" src=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/wlEmoticon-lightbulb.png\" \/>I like the fact that Gartner (the company that inflict us with hypes like \u201ccloud\u201d in their hype cycle) are not using VDI!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gunnar continued telling me that at a Synergy&#160; presentation he explained the audience he considers a SHVD a virtual desktop and SBC a session.&#160;&#160; <br clear=\"all\" \/><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-lightbulb\" style=\"border-top-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none\" alt=\"Gloeilampje\" src=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/wlEmoticon-lightbulb.png\" \/><\/em>&#160;<em>This got me frowning, so an application\/desktop on a private computer is not a session? I don\u2019t see the logic in here.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He ended by saying that application virtualization are not \u201cvirtual applications\u201d but containerized applications.&#160; <br clear=\"all\" \/>&#160;<em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-lightbulb\" style=\"border-top-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none\" alt=\"Gloeilampje\" src=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/wlEmoticon-lightbulb.png\" \/><\/em>&#160;<em>I like that! It prevents the misused \u201cvirtual\u201d word and makes sense IMHO.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<h1><font style=\"font-weight: bold\">VDI and SBC are out, in with the new terms<\/font><\/h1>\n<p>While the purpose of the previous article was to convince you the the VDI is utterly wrong, badly chosen, misplaced and just plain stupid (just kidding, but you get the point),&#160; with this article I want to take the next step: <strong>agree on a new term.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To reach global adoption of the new term we should collaborately agree on, use and advocate the new term. In order to agree on a new term I\u2019ve added a number of polls below. In case you miss a word or have any other suggestions just leave a comment.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<h1><font style=\"font-weight: bold\">This is where the real word bingo begins! <\/font><\/h1>\n<p>For each position choose the terms that describe the solution best. Whatever get the most votes, will be the new term to describe SBC \/ VDI.
