Although the products share great similarities (and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.myvirtualvision.com\/2013\/04\/15\/demistyfying-citrix-excalibur-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\">since v7.x<\/a> the underlying architecture is now common, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V6DP3jrqHeQ\" target=\"_blank\">FMA <\/a>rather than IMA),\u00a0 have their unique characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>What product do you need? When and why? In this article I\u2019m trying\u00a0 to help you make this decision based on a decision tree.<\/p>\n<p><em>During the course of this article I&#8217;m assuming you&#8217;re designing a XenApp \/ XenDesktop 7.x environment, however the principal is equal for XenApp 6.x and XenDesktop 5.x.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h1>\u00a0<\/h1>\n<h1>Primary Focus<\/h1>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with a common misconception, applications versus desktops. It&#8217;s easy to think that if you want to provide access to hosted <strong>app<\/strong>lications to your users you <strong>must<\/strong> use Xen<strong>App<\/strong> and if you want provide access to hosted <b>desktop<\/b>s<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>you can only use Xen<strong>Desktop<\/strong>. I guess we can partly blame Citrix for that as well since they do advocate a similar message, have a look on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citrix.com\/products.html\" target=\"_blank\">corporate website<\/a> (see highlighted in red) .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Citrix-Products-Mobile-apps-and-desktops.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" alt=\"Citrix Products - Mobile apps and desktops\" src=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Citrix-Products-Mobile-apps-and-desktops_thumb.png\" width=\"354\" height=\"169\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>primary<\/strong> <strong>focus<\/strong> of XenApp is (and always has been) applications and for XenDesktop the primary focus is desktops. However, both products can provide access to hosted applications <b><i>and<\/i><\/b> desktops, just in a different way. I wrote about this earlier in the article &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/en\/you-dont-need-xendesktop-for-a-virtual-desktop\/\" target=\"_blank\">You don&#8217;t need XenDesktop for a virtual desktop<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The major <strong>difference <\/strong>between XenApp and XenDesktop is the execution environment. Where XenDesktop provides access to hosted resources for a <strong>single user<\/strong> on a Windows <strong>client<\/strong> machine like Windows 7 or 8, XenApp provides access to hosted resources for <strong>multiple<\/strong> users on a Windows <strong>server<\/strong> machine. like Windows Server 2008R2 or 2012. So users on a machine running XenApp <strong>share <\/strong>all resources like CPU, GPU, memory, disk, etc. where users on a machine running XenDesktop get their <strong>own <\/strong>(private) CPU, GPU. memory, disk, etc.\u00a0 (not considering virtualization). Because XenApp shares resources, <strong>multiple<\/strong> users can use (multiple) applications at the same time, as opposed to XenDesktop where one only <strong>one<\/strong> user can run (multiple) applications at the same. I won&#8217;t use the terms SBC or VDI, in my opinion they contribute to the confusion around this already complex matter. I&#8217;ve discussed this in my <a href=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/en\/virtual-desktop-word-bingo-xendesktop-7\/\" target=\"_blank\">virtual desktop word bingo<\/a> article and concluded that we&#8217;re probably better of using the following terms, in relation to XenApp \/ XenDesktop:<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\">\n<caption>\u00a0<\/caption>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<\/td>\n<td><strong>XenApp<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>XenDesktop<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Application<\/td>\n<td>Hosted Shared Application<\/td>\n<td>Hosted Private Application<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Desktop<\/td>\n<td>Hosted Shared Desktop<\/td>\n<td>Hosted Private Desktop<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Mixed environment<\/h1>\n<p>As of version 7.x, <strong>XenDesktop<\/strong> and <strong>XenApp<\/strong> both share the same <strong>Flexcast<\/strong> Management Architecture (FMA) and as such can be easily <strong>mixed<\/strong> and managed using one central management console, <strong>Studio<\/strong>. In fact, XenDesktop versions 7 and 7.1 combine both products into one, leaving the good old <strong>IMA<\/strong> behind. Just recently Citrix announced the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/en\/citrix-released-xenbroker-7-5\/\" target=\"_blank\">XenApp and XenDesktop 7.5<\/a> (due in March this year) again as separate products. However, they&#8217;re sharing the same underlying architecture. Older environments (XenApp 6.x and XenDesktop 5.x) can <strong>coexist<\/strong> as well but needs to be managed separately, they can share the same license server.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>Sharing licenses<\/h6>\n<p>Licenses can be shared if the XenApp and XenDesktop machines share the same license server. This means that if you&#8217;re in a hosted desktop (XA\/XD) and connect to a hosted application (XA\/XD) from another machine, you require only one license. Important to mention is that the license type and edition on both machines needs to be equal (so two servers running XenApp Enterprise <strong>share <\/strong>a license but one server with XenApp Enterprise and another with XenDesktop Platinum <strong>won\u2019t<\/strong>). <em>If you want to view the used user \/ device license I recommend the free <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/bramwolfs.com\/2013\/08\/06\/udadmin-gui-a-free-tool-to-manage-xendesktop-userdevice-licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>UDadmin GUI<\/em><\/a><em> by Bram Wolfs. Not only does it show the used licenses it also enable you to release claimed license easily.<\/em><\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h6>Do you want to offer a mixed environment?<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The real question is, do you want to mix two delivery methods and offer them to the same user? Especially when you&#8217;re nesting sessions you could end up with some complex scenario&#8217;s, offering a mix of functional and technical challenges. The criteria are <strong>not <\/strong>written in stone, as always the term &#8220;<strong>it depends<\/strong>&#8221; applies. I&#8217;ve written a short description for each criteria to help you <strong>interpret<\/strong> the criteria.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note: <\/strong>Some of the criteria can be <strong>mitigated <\/strong>using third party tools.<\/em><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 598px;\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"155\"><strong>Criteria<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"441\"><strong>Description<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"156\">Needs to install software<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">Does the user need to install software on the hosted machine? Then it\u2019s most likely the software makes system wide changes that could affect other users on the same machine. To avoid one user from impacting another user it\u2019s recommended to provide users with their own machines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note <\/strong>To make system wide changes the user requires administrative privileges,.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"157\">Needs to install (kernel) drivers<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">Basically the same as with previous criteria, but it\u2019s unlikely that third party software can mitigate this for kernel drivers. Kernel drivers need to load before a user is logged on. However, user drivers (like printer drivers) can be installed by any users (unless that\u2019s blocked), also on a hosted shared machine (XenApp).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>To make system wide changes the user requires administrative privileges,.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"157\">Full USB capabilities required?<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">Citrix XenApp supports <strong>portable<\/strong> USB devices with HDX Plug-n-Play. The supported USB device types are limited because changes to the machine cannot be made on a shared machine. If <strong>broader<\/strong> USB device <strong>support<\/strong> is required XenDesktop offers <a href=\"https:\/\/support.citrix.com\/article\/CTX137939\" target=\"_blank\">generic USB redirection<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"157\">Requires administrative privileges?<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">If the user requires administrative privileges, for instance to make system wide changes, it\u2019s likely you want to provide the users its own machine. A user that can make system wide changes could potentially affect other users on the same machine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third party<\/strong>: There\u2019s software available that can dynamically inject administrative privileges (a taken) in\u00a0 processes that meet a certain criteria. As a result there\u2019s no need to make the member of the Administrators group preventing system wide changes from all other processes. <em>For instance\u00a0 RES <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/ww.ressoftware.com\/res-workspace-manager\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Workspace Manager<\/em><\/a><em> (feature: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joulupukki.nl\/wordpress\/?p=122\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Dynamic Privileges<\/em><\/a><em>) or AppSense <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appsense.com\/products\/desktop\/desktopnow\/environment-manager\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Environment Manager<\/em><\/a><em> (feature: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.appsense.com\/2012\/09\/utilizing-application-manager-urm-to-its-full-yet-restricting-ability\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>User Right Manager<\/em><\/a><em>). <br clear=\"all\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"157\">Vendor support for server OS?<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">If you depend on the support of the application vendor you need to ensure it supports running the application on a server operating system (XenApp). If they say No \u201cWe only support desktop operating systems\u201d you need to use XenDesktop<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: You could apply the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/patricka\/archive\/2010\/01\/14\/common-problems-with-checking-os-versions-in-code.aspx?Redirected=true\" target=\"_blank\">version lie<\/a>\u201d shim to hide you\u2019re running on a server OS <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" alt=\"Winking smile\" src=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile.png\" \/><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"157\">Resource intensive?<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">\n<p>If your application is very resource intensive (for example because it assumes all resource are at his disposal) it could consume resources that another user needs. The foundation of hosted shared machines running Citrix XenApp is Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (RDS), enabling the machine to be shared by multiple users. It contains a <strong>scheduler<\/strong> that gives each process a fair share of resources but provides to any process that asks (and if you shout you get more). Of course you can reduce the user count per hosted shared machine (XenApp).<\/p>\n<p><strong>RDSH<\/strong>: The Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) role of Windows Server 2008R2\/2012 provides features to mitigate for some resource intensive applications. The granularity is, compared to some third party software, not that detailed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third party<\/strong>: There\u2019s third party software available that can share resources more fair, for instance between users or sessions. Besides sharing more \u201cfair\u201d some software can also limit the available resources per processes, preventing them from saturating the system.For instance Andrew Morgan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewmorgan.ie\/2012\/05\/15\/introducing-threadlocker-a-community-tool-for-granular-control-of-processes\/\" target=\"_blank\">ThreadLocker<\/a> or AppSense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.appsense.com\/products\/desktop\/desktopnow\/performance-manager\" target=\"_blank\">Performance Manager<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"157\">1:1 relation between user and IP?<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">Some client-server software require the user to have it\u2019s own IP address for bi-directional communication (for instance some <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Java_Web_Start\" target=\"_blank\">Java Web Start<\/a> applications). This software can\u2019t be used on machines that share their IP address with multiple users: hosted shared (XenApp). In this situation each users needs to receive their own IP address. Since \u201cVirtual IP\u201d is no longer part of XenApp 7.x a hosted private machine is needed (XenDesktop).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Since Windows Server 2008R2 Microsoft offers \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/dd759263.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Remote Desktop IP virtualization<\/a>\u201d which \u2013 in essence \u2013 does the same as Virtual IP did.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"157\">1:1 relation between user and computer?<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">In some situation a 1:1 relation between the user and the computer is required. There are security principals that dictate that certain users are bound to the same machine. For instance with functional accounts: where they log on is restricted to a (short) list of machines. In these scenario\u2019s a hosted private machine is probably the most convenient solution.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"157\">Compatible with multiuser environment?<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"440\">Some software is not compatible with a multiuser environment because the software has a 1:1 relation between the machine and the user. When another user launches the application a conflict occurs. Especially older software assume they\u2019re the only one on the machine and use machine-specific resources for configuration \/ data \/ license purposes. When applications use folders like C:\\Windows \/\u00a0 C:\\Program Files or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) for user specific settings, a hosted private machine (XenDesktop) won\u2019t cause any problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>To make system wide changes the user requires administrative privileges,.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: You could apply shims to address application compatibility issues. They\u2019re commonly used by Microsoft (on their own software <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" alt=\"Smile\" src=\"https:\/\/ingmarverheij.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wlEmoticon-smile1.png\" \/>) but not always easy to implement. A detailed explanation about shims can be read in the\u00a0 Microsoft TechNet article <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/jj863250.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Managing Shims in an Enterprise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>3D graphics<\/h1>\n<p>If your applications require a <strong>GPU<\/strong> for <strong>3D graphics<\/strong> the decision tree can\u2019t help you, there are too many dependencies and the seems like everyday a new solution is provided. What\u2019s good to know that both XenApp and XenDesktop have \u201c<strong>GPU virtualization<\/strong>\u201d solutions enabling 3D workloads. A good starting point is the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citrix.com\/products\/xendesktop\/features\/high-def-experience\/hdx-3d-pro.html\" target=\"_blank\">Centrally deliver graphics-intensive 3D apps<\/a> page on the XenDesktop products page. To read about the most recent developments in this area read the Citrix Blogs with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.citrix.com\/tag\/hdx-3d-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\">hdx 3d pro tag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Alternative solutions<\/h1>\n<p>The decision tree helps you choose the right product but does not consider alternative solutions like Remote PC or \u201c1-on-1 Server VDI\u201c.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h6>Remote PC<\/h6>\n<p>Citrix has another product in their portfolio to offer remote access to a desktop system:<strong> Remote PC<\/strong>. Remote PC allows an end user to log on remotely to the physical PC in his or her office from virtually anywhere. It is part of <strong>XenDesktop\u2019s<\/strong> FlexCast delivery technology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>Server VDI<\/h6>\n<p>A creative solution to overcome the requirement for a <strong>VDA<\/strong> license (which apples when you\u2019re offering access to a hosted <strong>private <\/strong>system running a Windows <strong>client <\/strong>OS) and to overcome the limitation of the Microsoft <strong>SPLA<\/strong> license (as hosting provider you\u2019re not allowed to provide a hosted Client OS).Instead of\u00a0 sharing the resources of a\u00a0 <strong>server <\/strong>(XenApp) with <strong>multiple <\/strong>users a <strong>single <\/strong>user is assigned per server. This eliminates most of the challenges you might had, except for the server OS support.
